1950s Danish Rosewood Coffee Table By Frits Henningsen

Unusual rosewood coffee table, designed by Frits Henningsen, crafted by hand in Copenhagen, Denmark, 1950s.

The table top is rosewood veneer on engineered board, with a solid rosewood edge that meets at the corners with a miter joint. The table is double sided with two drawers on each of the longest sides. The drawer fronts are rosewood veneered, finished with cock beading and featuring victorian style drop handles. The drawer’s have dovetailed joints, the sides and back are made from satin birch and they run into the table on a recessed groove. With a fun nod to a desk design, the apron is cut out on both sides as if for a knee hole. The piece is supported by solid rosewood, square tapering legs.

Looking rather like a desk, but with generous coffee table proportions, this wonderful table would make a statement amongst a range of interiors, including nineteenth century, cottage, rustic, arts and crafts and early twentieth-century design schemes.

Frits Henningsen (1889-1965) was a Danish furniture designer and cabinet maker, who was known for the high standards of quality in his work as well as exclusively making everything by hand.

Henningsen owned a furniture making workshop in Copenhagen, Denmark, throughout the first half of the twentieth century; designing the furniture that was crafted by his team of cabinetmakers. All of his furniture was handmade in line with the traditional methods of the 19th century, using superior wood, and he was known and admired by his peers for the high quality of his craftsmanship. Henningsen, an active member of the Cabinetmakers Guild from 1927, was known for designing furniture with elegant lines and soft curves, that combined both style and comfort.

Table is currently waiting to be revived in our restoration workshop.

Whilst this piece is in great condition, it is vintage, and as such has patination commensurate with its age.
