Product Description

Description

Teak nest of three tables, designed by H.W. Klein manufactured in the 1960s by Bramin Møbler, Bramming, Denmark.

This beautifully crafted set of tables, are elegantly designed and manufactured to a high quality. The table tops are teak veneer on engineered board and have solid teak, moulded edges that connect, on the table’s gently rounded corners, with butt joints. The solid teak, tapering legs are finely turned and screw into the table top with a steel threaded dowel; the tables have no apron, giving them a minimalist and elegant silhouette. The legs can be readily unscrewed, making the tables easily transportable. The middle and small tables slide into runners on the underside of the table one larger than itself, suspending them from the floor; when they’re all nested, only the largest table is standing on the ground. The tables have been well taken care of and still have their original screws.

These tables are a lovely example of Danish Modernism and their minimal design would lend itself well to a range of interiors, including mid-century, Danish modern, contemporary and even art nouveau and cottage design schemes.

Details

Henry Walter (H.W.) Klein was born in Norway in 1919. After serving in the Norwegian Royal Marines, Klein pivoted to cabinetmaking, and in 1949 he moved to Denmark to study interior design at the Tekniske Skile in Frederikberg where he trained under the eminent Danish designer and architect Finn Juhl. After finishing school in 1952, Klein returned to Norway where he established his own furniture and interiors business, designing and producing dining furniture characteristic of the Danish Modern style. It was in the 1950s that Klein also became interested in making plastic furniture, even designing a new manufacturing method to do so - it was during this time that he began working with the manufacturer Bramin, in order to finance his endeavours. In 1960s Klein, along with his family, moved to Denmark so that he could work full time at Bramin, remaining at the company until it’s closure in 1980, whereupon the Klein’s moved to San Francisco.

Bramin Møbler was a furniture manufacturer, originating from in Bramming, Denmark, a town known for its progressive furniture industry. Originally known as N.A. Jørgensens Møbelfabrik, the company update its name in the late 1950s, to reflect a more contemporary brand image. Producing striking furniture, characteristic of the Danish Modern style, through the mid-twentieth century and into the 1980s, Bramin was one of Denmark’s larger furniture makers producing a wide range of furniture for the lounge and dining room, as well as distinctive sideboards and storage options. Bramin collaborated with some of the best designers of the modern era including Johannes Andersen, Hans Olsen, Kurt Østervig, and Frank Reenskaug, but their most successful partnership was with H.W. Klein with whom they worked closely from the 1960s until their closure. Bramin Møbler continued to be successful until the 1980s, when they were forced to close by the international financial crisis of that time. Today Bramin’s pieces are highly coveted items of furniture, straddling original design with exemplifying principles of the Danish Modern movement; human centred, elegantly simple, furniture, made with good quality materials.
